Toyokuni III, also known as Kunisada, was born in the Honjo district of Edo as Kunisada Tsunoda. Kunisada’s family owned a small hereditary ferryboat service. Though his father, an amateur poet, died when Kunisada was a child, the family business provided some financial security. Utagawa Toyokuni (1769, Edo – 24 de febrer del 1825, Edo) (japonès: 歌川豐國), sovint anomenat també Toyokuni I per diferenciar-lo dels membres de la seva escola que van assumir el seu goh (pseudònim) quan va morir; va ser un gran mestre d'ukiyo-e, conegut especialment pels seus gravats d'actors kabuki.

Utagawa Toyokuni had learned printmaking as a student of Toyoharu, the first head of the Utagawa School. Utagawa Toyokuni II (1777–1835), also known as Toyoshige, was a designer of ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints in Edo. He was the pupil, son-in-law and adopted son of Toyokuni I . The former used the name Toyoshige (豊重) until 1826, the year after his teacher’s death, when the family gave him the right to use his teacher's name and he began signing his work Toyokuni (豊国).
